PERSPECTIVE:

NEXT INDIAN PRESIDENT : WILL IT BE DR.P.C.ALEXANDER ?
BY JOSEPH KAPPIL - NEW YORK

[The Presidential Election is due in July, when Narayanan ends his five-year term. He was sworn in on July 25, 1997. We all Keralite irrespective of the Cast, Creed or Religion are proud that President Narayanan hails from Kerala. Now there can be one more chance for us to be proud and excited if we get one more President from our state, Dr.P.C.Alexander.]

New York:Dear friends, Recently it came to my notice through some accredited Indian Publication that some groups from Kerala expressed their resentment and disagreement on appointing an Indian Orthodox Person (Dr. P C Alexander, Maharashtra Governor for President) as the President of India and conveyed their reservation even to the Government with an interesting reasoning as '...Indian President, as we want highest office unbiased.' I would like to express few thoughts on this:

There is no good reason to believe this is the representation of any church, but this kind of statements are only doing disservice to the Churches and the Christian Community. It is very unfortunate to make such an ignorant statement, shows little knowledge on the highest office of the nation and its personality. We never had any Christian President in India or any Christian denominations member as President, to be concern about - loosing representation, if that is the case.!. India is a secular country, we should not worry about the faith of anyone other than the constitutional rights of any citizen. If all Christians or any , one state decide, it may not make much difference to make Mr. Alexander nominated or elected. Present Indian President, Dr. Narayanan , a Karalite, is the president of all Indians. Still as Keralites, we can all have a very proud feeling, as he is someone from our home state.

"Dr. P.C.Alexander is one of the most distinguished and respected Public Servants of the Post-Independence Era, distinguished and respected because of the high standards of efficiency, impartiality and integrity he had tried to maintain throughout his career. An outstanding statesman and administrator, he has the distinction of having held several high positions in public life both at the national and international levels spanning a period of over half a century" I have no reasons to believe against Mr. Alexander's suitability, considering his long years of service to the nation and his skills. I have no connection to Mr. Alexander's any interest to this highest office. But my simple judgment is: As Maharashtra Governor, for the last 10 years, Mr. Alexander is demonstrating an excellent leadership and approval among other Indians and to the ruling political parties of the Central Govt. - I do not think Muslims or Hindus would go against Mr. Alexander because of his religion. Instead, they may consider such an experienced, capable person should be the one we need for this time of much needed communal harmony everywhere.

As a sovereign democratic nation, India can elect anyone to its highest office, but a Christian President could definitely make better image for the ruling Baratiya Janata Party in India or overseas. - I have absolutely nothing to see him low, otherwise there would have no such person at this level. Please look at his profile:
Three years as Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India,
Four years as Principal Secretary to Prime Minister
Three years as High Commissioner for India in London
Over eleven years as Governor (Tamil Nadu 1988-90 of which one year was when the State was under President's rule and Maharashtra from January 1993), and
Ten years in senior posts in the U. N. Civil Service

It was while serving as Assistant Secretary General and Executive Director of the UN International Trade Center, Geneva, that Mrs. Indira Gandhi invited him to join her office as Principal Secretary. Later to Raja Gandhi during the years 1981-1985, he played a very crucial role in the momentous developments of this period. He had training in the Board of Trade U.K. under a Nuffield Foundation Fellowship and did research at the Stanford Research Institute, California, U.S.A. under a Ford Foundation Fellowship." My humble opinion is please make better judgement. Thanks.
Joseph Kappil

PHILADELPHIA AREA SUNDAY SCHOOL CONFERENCE:
The one-day conference of the teachers and students of the parish Sunday Schools of Philadelphia Area of the Eastern Region of the American Diocese Sunday School Association was held on Saturday, 16th of March, 2002 at St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Philadelphia. The Very Rev. Thomas P. Mundukuzhy Cor Episcopa, the Sunday School Association Director presided over the meeting. Over seventy students and teachers of the area Sunday Schools attended the conference. Notable among the attending teachers were Mrs. Sosamma Jacob, HM, and Mr. Chacko Mathen of St. Mary's Church, Mr. Jacob John, HM, and Mrs. Liz Pothen of St. Thomas Church, and Mr. Paul J. Maret, HM, and Miss Sheena Mathai of St. Gregorios Church.

The attendees were heartily welcomed through a delightful song session led by Miss Sheena Mathai, other teachers and senior students of St. Gregorios parish SS. After the opening prayer led by Mundukuzhy Achen, the Area Inspector Mr. Korah T. Mani welcomed the attendees on behalf of the St. Gregorios Church vicar, Very Rev. K. Mathai Cor Episcopa who was away in Kerala, India to attend the Malankara Association meeting. He stressed the importance of this conference to the students and teachers of the area parish SSs, since it provided a forum for dialogue with the SS Director who has single-handedly taken the responsibility of organizing and energizing the SS Association in North America. He has been instrumental in the development of the workbooks for each grade; it was his interest that started the talent show and talent competition, and the centralized examination, being held at the diocese level. The diocese owes a lot to him for his commitment and dedication in invigorating the Association from its start. Korah Mani pointed out Achen's special interest in training the teachers to teach our children about our faith, tradition, history and our service, for which he has authored the book "Our Church", an encyclopedia of Indian Orthodox Church.

After self-introduction by the attendees, the SS Association Director addressed the gathering. In his address, Mundukuzhy Achen cited the significance of the English translations of our Holy Service and daily prayer books in order to keep our children 'engaged' during the worship services and family prayer times. The floor was opened for

Question and Answer session primarily aimed at giving an opportunity for the students to take advantage of Mundukuzhy Achen's vast knowledge about our Church, and his commitment to our children who are born and/or brought up in this country. The Q&A session was skillfully moderated by Mr. Jacob John, HM of St. Thomas parish SS who directed the questions to Achen for his response. At times, his son-in-law Dr.Robbin Mathew helped Achen in responding to certain questions, the way the children liked to hear.

Before the lunch break, the attendees celebrated the Catholicate Day which fell on the following Sunday. Achen led the special prayers for the day, a lively procession, and the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Church and to the Throne of the Catholicate, followed by singing of the Catholicate anthem, and the noon prayer.

After lunch, the choir led by Miss Sheena Mathai entertained the gathering with melodious hymns. The main item for the afternoon was the Bible Trivia. Mr. Jacob John assembled hundreds of trivia questions from the Bible and on our Church. The attending students were grouped into three teams, A, B, and C. Mundukuzhy Achen orchestrated the trivia session; he selected, and asked the questions to each team in sequence. The team spirit and the quest for the right answer were evident among the team members during the entire trivia session. Though the teams were very close to each other in terms of their performance for most of the challenges, team A came out with the top score, thus qualifying themselves to represent Philadelphia Area in the Regional/diocesan level trivia competition. Team A members selected the following students to represent them at the regional competition: Libby Abraham, Libu Geevarghese, Marina Issac, Jenny Joy, and Lynne Raju. Confectionaries were distributed among the participants for a lively competition.

Mr. Paul J. Maret, HM of St. Gregorios parish SS thanked the attendees and the distinguished guests, namely the SSAssociation Director, Mundukuzhy Achen, Kochamma and family, the HMs, and the teachers and students of the area parishes, for attending the conference. He recognized the organizers behind the arrangements for the conference, including those who helped in preparing and serving the lunch for Achen and family. He thanked Mathai Achen, the vicar, Mr. Yohannan Mathai, the parish Secretary, Mr. Mathew Varghese, the Treasurer, and the members of St. Gregorios Church for their wholehearted support for the success of this conference.

The Area Inspector Mr. Korah Mani handed over to Mundukuzhy Achen an amount of $200.00 which was raised at the Philadelphia Area OVBS of 2000, held at St. Thomas Church, and an additional $22.00 collected from the attendees of this conference, towards the Diocesan Center Fund. The meeting concluded with prayer at 3: 30 P.M.

BIBLE QUIZ COMPETITION DEMONSTRATION:
Very Rev. Thomas Mundukuzhy, our Sunday School Director, led a Bible quiz competition demonstration at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, Houston on April 21st in the afternoon. The participants included the senior students from the three parishes in Houston area (St. Thomas, St. Stephen's, and St. Gregorios). They were put in three groups of five representing each parish. Each group was assigned a leader. Once the question was read, the members of each group discussed the answer among themselves and came to an agreement. Points were given to each group according to the answer announced by the leader. About 25 questions were asked. Every participant received a prayer book as reward from Fr. Mundukuzhy.

This gave the students a chance to practice teamwork within each group. It also challenged them to compete against the other teams. It also helped them to become aware of their knowledge of the Bible.

This event was coordinated by the area inspector John Kunnathu, and the three headmasters Philip Philipose, Koshy Varghese, and Benny John. Several teachers from all the three churches were present who met with Achen after the demonstration to air their concerns about our Sunday School activities.

Achen celebrated holy qurbana earlier at St. Thomas Church.

MALANKARA ORTHODOX CHURCH
REALIZE THE TRUTH, EXECUTE JUSTICE AND ESTABLISH PEACE
PROF. E.J. JOHN PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER

1. There is only one Malankara Orthodox Church. The rule of the Malankara Church should be in accordance with the church constitution of 1934
In the light of the final judgement and decree of the Hon. Supreme Court of India in 1995 and the subsequent orders, it has been established in unquestionable terms that there is only one Malankara Orthodox Church (Sabha) and it's Dioceses, Parish Churches, Institutions and organization should be loyal of the constitution of 1934 of the Malankara Orthodox Sabha and should be ruled according to the constitution.

2. The title of 'Malankara Metropolitan' of the Prime Supreme Head of the Malankara Orthodox Church can not be questioned.
As per the orders of the Supreme Court dated 12-7-02 it has been approved and declared undoubtedly that all should regard His Holiness Marthoma Mathews II Catholicos, as Malankara Metropolitan as well, and it is not liable to be questioned in any court of law or in any forum.

3. The actions of the decedent faction in the church is a challenge to the rule of laws of India..
With disregard to the judgement of the Supreme Court and against the church constitution of 1934, the decedent group has declared the formation of a new church, a new constitution and a rival catholicos , consecrating Devennasios as Baselios Thomas I. This is the challenge to the rule of law of the land and contempt of court. Decedent group cannot claim any of the 1662 Parishes of the Malankara Orthodox Church. All these have since been included in the list of the Malankara Suriyani Christian Association and approved by the Supreme Court

4. Unconstitutionally concerted catholicose and others have been declared unlawful ..
The Hon. Kerala High Court in 1990 had issued orders declaring Mar Devennasios and others perpetual unlawful and debarring them and the Hon. Supreme Court in 1995 had approved it and included in the Decree that Mar Devannasios was not lawfully concerted Metropolitan and he had no right to enter in any of the Churches of the Malankara Sabha or to perform sacramental and rituals. Moreover, the Sub court of Mavelikara in 2001 March 7, the Muncif Court of Chengannore in 2002 July 24 and the Eranakulam Church Court in 2002 August 3 have issued orders debarring Devannasios entering in the Parish Churches of the Malankara Sabha and to function as Catholicos.

5. Execute the court orders and do justice .
It is the duty of the government to execute the court orders and prevent the unlawful entry, encroachment, and violence by the decedent group-a duty and the responsibility of the Government in accordance with the constitution of India

6. Malankara Sabha strongly protest against the inaction and passive attitude of the Government. .
It is the demand of the Malanakara Orthodox Church that the court orders should be executed and Justices done. It is the right of the Church and not a favor. If the Government is not acting upon it, there will be far reaching consequence for which the Government alone will be responsible, we warn.

7. We shall preserve the Orthodox faith and rituals of the Church. .
The Christians all over the world know and believe that St. Thomas is the founder of the Malankara Church. All Christian denominations of India also believe and approve of it. This is a historical truth. The Prime Supreme head of the Malankara Orthodox Church, founded by St. Thomas, Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews II have been approved and declared as such by the have been approved and declared as such by the Hon. Supreme Court of India. we, the faith full of the ancient Malankara Orthodox Church do solemnly pledge that we shall preserve the faith paternity and tradition of our church.

DEVALOKAM RELEASE
THE MALANKARA ORTHODOX SYRIAN CHURCH
STATUS OF PARISH CHURCHES AND NATURE OF PARISH PROPERTIES

1. The parish Churches of Malankara Church are founded and established as constituents of the Malankara Church. Parish Churches are not intended and cannot have an independent existence apart from the Sabha and the administration of the Sabha. If so the general accepted rules of administration the Sabha are applicable to their administration. Such rules of administration are embodied in the 1934 Constitution of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. It is thus authoritatively laid down by the Supreme Court of India. See in this connection Para 142 of the Judgement reported in AIR 1995 SC 2001.

2. In almost all the suits the matter in issue is only, the mode of administration of parishes and who are the competent persons to be in management of the properties and assets of the parish churches. The question of ownership or legal nature of the parish assets vis a vis their title is not a mater that arises really. In the main suit O.S.4/1979 of the Kerala High Court which was decided by the Hon'ble Supreme Court also, the mode of administration of parish properties and the nature and status of parish churches as constituents of the Malankara Church alone were in dispute.

3. See in this connection, the reliefs prayed for in the said suit as extracted in para 132 of the judgment of the Supreme Court.
See – A- relief specifically noted below:
"A- To declare that Malankara Church is Episcopal in character and is not a Union or Federation of autonomous church units and is governed in its administration by the Constitution of the Malankara Church."

4. The scheme and provisions of the Constitution make it beyond doubt that parish churches are not autonomous units. So when constitution if fully upheld by the Hon'ble Supreme Court and when it is declared to be binding on parish churches also, this relief is in effect granted by the Hon'ble Supreme Court.

5. Apart from other references in this regard read para 142 of the Supreme Court Judgement – 142(5) (6) (8) 142 (8) is of prime importance in this matter.

"(8) So far as the declaration of the Malankara Church being Episcopal in character is concerned all we need hold is that it is Episcopal to the extent it is so declared in the 1934 constitution. The said constitution also governs the affairs of the parish churches and shall prevail"

The said finding in effect is really a grant of the declaration sought for in "A" relief in the plaint as extracted above.

6. The Kerala High Court by the judgement of the Division bench decreed the suit O.S.4/1979 as prayer for. This decree is only modified if at all by the Supreme Court as per the findings in para 142. Those finding do not go against the Kerala Division Bench decree but really affirms it in this matter. The vexed question of ownership of the parish properties or what is the real nature and legal character of parish properties need not be gone into so far the church dispute suits are concerned.

7. The observation in the Hon'ble supreme Court Judgement in para 141 have to be understood in the above back ground. The discussion clearly shows that the court is not really deciding and it is not also necessary to be decided as per the pleading of the case, the ownership of the parish assets. See in this connectio the following statement "Without impleading affected parties on declaration can be claimed by the plaintiffs that the Church is Episcopal in nature"

But necessarily the Episcopal powers so far as stated in the Constitution are up held. See, what Supreme Court says in the same para. "In the state of such pleading, the only observation that can be made herein is that the 1934 Constitution shall govern and regulate the affairs of parish churches too, in so far as the said constitution provides for the same. "Again it is said" In sum we observe that the 1934 Constitution governs the affairs of the Parish Churches too in so far as it does".

8. The two Hon'ble Judges namely justice B.P Jeevan Reddy and Justice S.C. Sen did not decide as to the title to parish properties or their ownership or legal character because it does not arise in the pleading and cannot be decided without impleading affected parties; probably the parish churches as such. So their judgement cannot be relied on to say that parish churches are independent autonomous units and title and ownership of parish properties vest with parishioners with a consequent right to administer the parish properties as they want and desire. In fact it is clearly stated that 1934 constitution governs their administration. In the 1934 constitution Chapter2, The Parish Church, Clauses 6 to 44 clearly show how Parish Churches are to be administered.

9. As to what exactly is a parish and the nature and legal character of parish properties is considered in detail by Hon'ble Justice R.M. Sahai the Presiding Judge in paragraphs 58 to 74. See the end of para 74. "But once a church is established then the property vests in the endowment and it becomes a public charity, the administration and control of which has to be governed in accordance with the objective of the endowment". It is also clearly stated that, "they cannot claim to be independent especially after the Constitution of 1934 was framed".?

It necessarily follows that Parish assets are dedicated trust properties to be utilised for worship and to ensure spiritual benefits to the parishioners; of course with the ultimate endowment being with the Malankara Sabha as postulated in the Constitution.

10. Parish Churches are included in various Dioceses of the Church, each under the control of a Diocesan Metropolitan. Clauses 66 and 94 of the 1934 Constitution are noted below in this connection.

66. The Diocesan Metropolitans shall carry on the administration of the Dioceses under their care subject to the supervision of the Malankara Metropolitan.

94. The jurisdiction regarding the temporal, ecclesiastical and spiritual administration of the Malankara Church is vested in the Malankara Metropolitan subject to the provisions of this constitution.

11. The important points to be noted are:

1. Parish Churches are constituent units of the Malankara Church
2. Parish Churches are bound by the 1934 Constitution and are not independent?
3. Parish Churches have to be administered as per clauses 6 to 44 of the 1934 Constitution.

It is unfortunate that the respondent and others belonging to the Patriarch faction did not participate. It was announced in the papers that they have decided to boycott the election. The newspapers reported about the respondent and his supporters holding a meeting on the same day at another place. The respondent being a party to the consent order passed by the Supreme Court was expected to participate and cooperate in implementing the order of the Supreme Court. The conduct of the Respondent invites adverse inference against him.

PARA NO:31 Election to the Managing Committee :
Election to the Managing Committee is regulated by part 5 of the election rules. Whereas the Association fixes the total number of member of the Managing Committee, the number of members to be elected from each Dioceses is fixed by the Managing Committee. All the Dioceses were invited to nominate candidates for election to the Managing Committee to be held at the Association meeting. For this purpose the meeting of the Association namely of all the representatives elected from the parish Churches of the Diocese was convened at Parumala on 20-3-2002. The number of nominations received in respect of each Diocese was equal to the number of members to be elected from each Diocese. None had complained about the validity of the nominations received. Therefore all the candidates were elected unopposed from all the Dioceses. At the meeting held on 20-3-2002 the names of the elected members of the Managing Committee were read out. This consisted of 37 Priests and 74 Laymen whose names are furnished Diocese wise in Annexure 38. I am satisfied that the election to the Managing Committee was proper. The report furnished by the appellant in this behalf is Annexure-40

PARA NO:32 My findings are as follows:

A.

Free and fair elections were held to the Malankara Association to elect representatives from all the Parish Churches \following the past practice and proceedings. Only 45 complaints were received of whom 8 were allowed by the Tribunal.

B.

Final list of Voters/member was correctly prepared and published following the prescribed procedure.

C.

The meeting of the Malankara Association was convened at Parumala on 20-3-2002 efficiently and in a free and fair manner.

D.

Secret Voting was held to decide whether Morn Mar Baselius Marthoma Mathews II is or not the Malankara Metropolitan. It was decided by overwhelming majority of 3464 against 10, that Moran Mar Baselius Marthoma Mathews II is the Malankara Metropolitan. The decision was free and fair. The result was correct and was authenticated by me before it was announced.

E.

Election to the Managing Committee was also held at the same meeting. As the number of Candidates equalled the number of positions all the nominated candidates were declared elected unopposed.

F.

The directions of the Supreme Court given on 28-11-2001 has been faithfully and correctly carried out in the matter of conducting election and satisfactory execution of the decree, within the prescribed time.

NINETIETH YEAR JUBILEE OF INSTITUTION OF THE CATHOLICATE OF EAST

By JACOB YESUDASAN

Pathanamthitta, Sept 15 : Malanakara Orthodox Syrian Church celebrated the Ninetieth Year Jubilee of the institution of the Catholicate of the East in India.

Addressing a gathering of tens of thousands of believers, His Holiness Moron Mor Baselius Marthoma Mathews - II, the Catholicose of the East of the See of St. Thomas and The Malanakara Metropolitan said that with the installation of the Catholicate in Malanakara in the year 1912, the autocephaly of the church here was established, which has the absolute acceptance of the world Christendom and now, by the verdict of the Hon. Supreme Court of India, it has been reiterated that the Catholicose was the only head of the Malankara Church.

In welcoming His Holiness and other Metropolitans of the church and dignitaries, His Grace Philipos Mar Eusebius, the Diocesan Metropolitan of Thumpamon said that the Catholicate of the East was instituted by the Apostle St. Thomas and that it was not a gift of the Syrian Patriarch. As per the Cannon, the Patriarch of Antioch has no lawful authority to consecrate a Bishop without the consent of the Catholicose and the 'Malankara Suriani Christiani Association' in session.

His beatitude Thomas Mar Thimothios, the Catholicose designate presided over the function. Metropolitans Dr. Mathews Mar Severius and Dr. Thomas Mar. Athanasius of the Kandanad diocese deliberated the present position of the Church and its standpoints in the controvesy of 'unlawful appointment' of a rival Catholicose without proper Canonical consecration. Sabha Secretary Dr. Alexander Karackel and Prof Fr. P. T. John Panarayil also spoke on the occasion.

The assembly passed by applause a resolution of Faith on the Catholicose and a resolution of Protest against the negative attitude of the Govt. of Kerala in executing the verdict of the Hon.Supreme Court which is in favour of the Malankara Orthodox Church. The function was preceded by a thickly attended strong protest rally under the auspice of the 119 Parishes of the Diocese of Thumpamon.

PEACE MARCH EFFORTS FOR COMMUNAL HARMONY

Day to day peace and communal harmony is becoming only a dream of every peace loving citizen of India. How many people's life had been brutally taken away on this particular cause. This situation has been aggravated with the recent infiltration of terrorism to the religious arena of our country. It is the utmost duty of every citizen of India irrespective of their state, caste or religion to think about this alarming state of our country and contribute with all the resources for peaceful tommorow for our country.

Rev.Dr.Valsan Thampu who is minority commission member of Delhi, report on the peace march effort planned:

'I am writing this on the eve of my departure for Lucknow , together with a whole lot of other people, to launch what would have been a peace march from Ayodhya to Raj Ghat, about which some of you are already aware. Now the peace march stands curtailed to Lucknow à Raj Ghat. The reason is that the District Magistrate of Fazabad, Shri. Alok Kumar, has banned the peace marchers from entering Ayodhya and has slapped section 144 on Ayodhya and Faizabad. The stated pretext is that this peace march is a threat to communal harmony in Ayodhya! I do not have to tell you stories about how the administration in that blessed district has been safeguarding communal harmony in Ayodhya or how that holy city has emerged in recent times as a symbol of peace and harmony, thanks to the impartial administration obtained their.

Be that as it may, this is an eye-opener, especially in the light of the Gaurav Yatra undertaken by Shri. Narendra Modi in Gujarat. In the wake of the worst communal atrocity that the state of the Mahatma has ever seen, and flying in the face of the pleas and protests of every sensible citizen in the country, the march of the communal juggernaut has gone on without let or hindrance for so many days. In Ayodhya, as most of us still remember, sadhus and politicians of a certain description were allowed to enact the tragic-comedy of the shila daan, which was not only a bad mark on the communal profile of that city, but also a slur on the secular image of the country as a whole. But we have reached, it seems, a stage in the evolution of our nation in which democratic ideals like equality of citizens in the eye of the law or secular ideal like equal treatment of all religions by the State are becoming obsolete

Let us return to the peace march and see how subversive this is meant to be. The former President of India, Shri. K. R. Narayanan is the Patron-in-Chief of this Peace March, called Mil ke Chalo (let us move together). As the name suggests, the march is the embodiment of the people's aspiration to be united rather than divided. Former Prime Ministers Shri. Chandra Sekhar, Shri. V. P. Singh and Shri. I. K. Gujral are among the patrons. A large number of Hindu sadhus and dharmacharyas as among the Peace Pilgrims. Leaders of all religions as well eminent citizens are participating in the march. In Delhi, thousands of school children will join the march and take a pledge to live and work for peace and harmony in the society. In the judgment of the Faizabad administration, all these are subversive.

When the DM banned the peace march, I made representations to Ms. Mayawati, the Chief Minister of UP as well as to Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the poet-Prime Minister of India, pleading for their intervention. I have met with a deafening silence. The most painful irony of contemporary India is that those who represent the aspiration of the dalits, the oppressed people, have become the handmaidens of those they have seen till the other day as their oppressors. In the end it is not one Alok Kumar, it is Ms. Mayawati who must hold responsible for the banning of peace marches and efforts to promote communal harmony in the state.

In the of this concrete experience, I wish to appeal to all of you to shake of the slough of apathy and complacency and do all you can to form local networks (necessarily multi-religious) to promote peace and harmony in our neighbourhoods. If we believe that we can leave this task to politicians, of all the people we shall be the most foolish. All through history, it is war and not peace that has enabled the ruling elite to prosper and secure their stranglehold on power. But peace is basic to the welfare of the people. That is our commitment: a commitment that we can share with all people.

If only you would something on Gandhi Jayanti Day (October 2nd) to celebrate people's preference for peace and communal harmony, you would have done something to discourage the dreams of the oppressors. Sometimes small public expressions become the storms that uproot seemingly mighty trees.

A crucial sector of involvement is schools. The communal and aggressive ideologies are targeting schools in a big way. Doors are open even today for us to do the damage-control work in this sector. In the last three months, I have had the occasion to address thousands of students, teachers and parents and the responses I have had, barring a few, are positive and encouraging. It is alarming how little people think for themselves and how much they depend on mere opinions. So far this vulnerability has been exploited only by the communal forces and they have made significant in-roads. Those who believe in peace and good will must engage this battle on the side of sanity and peace. There is much that we can do still; let us do it where it is still possible for us to do something. We do not know how long this freedom will last. My experiences in working on the peace march make me inclined to believe that we are closer to the precipice than we imagine.

SOCIETY PERSPECTIVE:

RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE

By JOSEPH KAPPIL

Dear friends,
The recent attack on the Swaminarayan Temple in Gandhi Nagar in Gujarat is a serious concern for all of us. If we cannot show tolerance and respect each other, our faith is not serving the purpose. Fighting between Hindus, Muslims, and recent news on attacks on some Christian Churches in Kerala are part of the same problem. Some 23 are reported as killed and another 60 seriously injured in Gujarat. The dead included 13 men, six women and four children.

It's sad to remember Mahatma Gandhi's birthday on October 2nd with this terrible agony.( Gandhiji, is from Gujarat). In 1947 when India got independence, it is estimated that from 200,000 to 2 million were killed in inter-religious riots that accompanied the mass relocation. And many more lost life for this same cause. Violence and hatred only create more of it. History shows, more innocent people are suffered.
Thanks
Joseph Kappil

THE TRUTH WILL LIBERATE US

By FR. TITUS GEORGE
Malankara Orthodox Church Diocesan Secretary, Thumpamon

Malakara Orthodox Church is passing through a crucial stage, a difficult situation. Hon. Supreme Court of India, the apex judiciary of the land, has given the verdict in favour of us. Then why this difficulty arises? This is a thought that comes in every mind. It is doubted that our nation is becoming a land of those who deny justice and those who defy the orders of the court of law. Not only in church affairs but also in all other areas, the situation remains the same. There also exists today a peculiar situation that the media is in a competitive run to establish 'untruths' and 'semi truths' to be the truths. The Government has the responsibility to ensure that the orders of the Supreme Judiciary is executed and enforced. The main cause of the prevailing problems is the reluctant attitude of the Government and the support to the decedent faction. A Government that comes in power by constitutional means cannot continue for long in this manner. Though the truth could be suppressed or shadowed for a while, it would prevail ultimately. As in the words of Geevarghese II, the great Bava, The Truth will prevail, The Truth will prevail, The Truth will Prevail"

Our Church Fathers showed magnanimity in 1958 in accepting the opposite party unconditionally, when we gained a favorable Court Order. From 1958 to 1972, all parishes in the Malankara Sabha continued to enjoy the unity under the leadership of Malankara Metropolitan in compliance with the constitution of 1934. Thereafter, in defiance of the constitution, the patriarch of Antioch Yocob III consecrated Bishops and created a rival force. In addition, a controversial Kalpana that St .Thomas had no Apostolic succession of priesthood was issued. This again brought about litigation and an end to it was spelt out by the Hon. Supreme Court by its verdicts of 1995, 1997 and finally on 12th July ,2002. There is no change in the standpoints of our church towards the patriarch since 1958. We honour Him, giving due right, and respect enshrined in the constitution. His Holiness has the right to preside over the Synods of Ecumenical Syrian Church (Akamana Suriani Sabha). His Holiness has no right to interfere in the spiritual and worldly affairs of the Malankara Sabha which is autocephalious. It is relevant here to recall the observation of the Suprem Court that even in the matters of Patriarh's rights on spiritual matters was reaching vanishing point. The Hon. Supreme Court has found and testified that the Catholicate of the See of St. Thomas installed here in 1912 has the universal acceptance of all concerned. Our Lord said to His disciples that they would sit over twelve throwns and rule over the twelve tribes of Israel. No power can erase from our mind the Holy Father who came to India and gave us the light of the Gospel.

The subject of the present verdict of the Supreme Court is that there is only one Orthodox Church in India and all parishes and other institutions would be governed according to the constitution of 1934 under the Malankara Metropolitan. As a prominent and powerful Christian community in Kerala, the Court desired to see the unity of the Church. For that purpose, accepting certain arguments of the other party, the constitution was amended, got the membership in the Malankara Association proportionate to the membership of the believers and cancelled the voting right of the nominated members of the managing committee. The other party accepted the proposal of the Court to hold the Malankara Association together. The retired Chief Justice Malimath was appointed by the Hon. Supreme Court as observer. Even the position of the Malankara Metropolitan was subjected to the decision of the newly elected association. The newly elected Managing Committee is given the powers to take crucial decisions Mar. Devenasius and party boycotted the Association held at Parumala on 20th March 2002 under the observation of Justice Malimath, for the fear of becoming minority. Mar Devenasius summoned an unauthorized Assembly of the rival faction, adopted an unlawful constitution and Christened themselves as 'Yacobaya Suriani Sabha', dropping 'Malankara' from the ancient title name and thus formed a new Sect. The Court did not approve any of these actions, instead, approving the decision of the Association held at Parumala, the Hon. Supreme Court issued Decree in July 2002 to the effect that the position of the Malankara Metropolitan could not be held in question in any Court of Law or in any other forum.

The parishes should be ruled as per the constitution of 1934. The autonomous rights of the Parishes are subject to obligation to Church constitution. "Where there is Bishop there is Church" is the faith of the Church . The vicars serve the parishes on behalf of the Metropolitan. Parish trusty and the vicar are co-trustees. If the decisions of the general body of the Parish are irrelevant, Metropolitan has the power to over rule them. Metropolitan's consent is required to buy or sell properties of the Parishes. To safeguard the interest of the minorities of the Parishes, there is Metropolitan above the general body and above Him there is Malankara Metropolitan – Chruch managing committee and Synod. How could a traditional and established church could exist without all these ? How could a parish change affinity to anyone from time to time and continue the existence? The Metropolitan has the power to decide the matters concerning Faith, Order and Discipline. All Churches, including Manarcadu Church, were ruled under the Malankara Metroplitan from 1958 to 1972. As per the law, all churches are under the Malankara Metropolitan and He has the right to bring all the Churches under Him and rule according to the constitution. That is being endeavored.

It is the truth of the history that the Church grew in persecution and hardships. Our Church, with the magnitude of the strength of believers, wealth and executive capability, can surely overcome the present stage of the difficulties by prayerfully united under the Catholicate. Let us preserve the freedom that gained for us by Vattasseril Thirumani and Kallassery Bava and other Church Fathers by the virtue of their selfless services.

VAIDEEKARUDE VAIDEEKAN

By MONY KALLENPARAMPIL

A WORD OF INTRODUCTION
The Rev. Dr. V. C. Samuel Ecumenical Forum has taken initiative to publish the book 'VAIDEEKARUDE VAIDEEKAN' to propagate the ideas of Rev. Dr. V. C. Samuel who is the 'MAHA MALPAN (Grand Guru)' of all the Eastern Churches. It throws much light on the crystal clean personality of Rev. Dr. V. C. Samuel and his wonderful world of ideas. This book contains more than 50 articles written by various church dignitaries on the contributions of Rev. Dr. V. C. Samuel to the Christian world. This is a genuine attempt to bring forth his ideas truly and correctly.

Mr. Joy John Mezhuveli had introduced this book "VAIDEEKARUDE VAIDEEKAN'' while addressing the 4th ORTHODOX FAMILY CONFERENCE of St. Gregorios Orthodox Society at Parumala held on 20th & 21st July 2002. Rev. Dr. K.M. George, Principal, Orthodox Theological College, presided over the meeting. Mr. John added that Rev. Dr. V. C. Samuel of blessed memory was versatile genius. His extra-ordinary scholarly research works are internationally adored. He was ecumenical in outlook. He was humble, truthful and highly spiritual in personal life. His contributions in Theology, Philosophy, Christology, Church History and Ecumenism are substantial. He stood for religious and cultural harmony. His utmost interest to concentrate on the teachings of the early Ecumenical fathers of the Church and the ancient Church Councils contributed much to heal the wounds in the history of the Church.

His writings deal with issues of contemporary significance to universal and national situations. Many scholars are now attracted by his revolutionary ideas on Church and Society. Mr. John suggested that the members of Malankara Church might buy this book edited by Fr. Dr. K. L. Mathew Vaidyan and Mr. E. J. Varghese for their further reference and study. He reiterated that those who want to know more about Orthodox Church should first get acquainted with the contributions of Fr. V. C. Samuel. A brief biography of Rev. Dr. V. C. Samuel Very Rev. Fr. Dr. V. C. Samuel (1912 - 1998), a world-renowned priest of the Indian Orthodox Church, was one of the greatest scholars of theology, Philosopher and an ecumenically committed and distinguished Church Historian. Rev. Dr. V. C. Samuel, a real Malpan (Teacher of Syriac and Ecclesiastical Doctrines, University Professor and Dean), was a prolific writer, thinker, philosopher, ecumenist and preacher of religious and cultural harmony.

His father, late E.I.Cherian M.L.C (Member of the Legislative Council) of the Edayil family, was a teacher and educationist who established several schools for general education in the area. Fr. Samuel was born on April 6th 1912, in the village of Omalloor, (Pathanamthitta Dist.). After finishing high school education he mastered the Syriac language and important works of Bar Hebraus and other doctors of Church and became the Malpan, and thus happened to be one of the founders of Manjanikkara Seminary, once an important centre for the study of Syriac and theology. He was ordained as priest in 1937. Fr. Samuel devoted himself to sixteen years continuous university study and research. He completed B.A., (first rank with gold medal) from Travancore University and M.A. from Madras University, both in Philosophy. After completing a Bachelor of Divinity degree with distinction from the Serampore University, he proceeded to the United States for further studies. At the Union Seminary, New York, he extensively studied Mar Severus of Antioch and submitted his thesis "The Christology of Severus of Antioch". In 1954 he received S.T.M. degree (magna cum loud) from the Seminary. After three years-thorough researches in the Divinity School of Yale University, New Haven he received the Ph.D. for his dissertation titled "The council of Chalcedon and the Christology of Severus of Antioch". He subsequently pursued post – doctoral research in Hindu Christian Thought Comparison and Ramakrishna Mission for three years, of which two years were spent in the Christian Institute for the Study of Religion, Bangalore and one year at Chicago University as a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow. After reaching the highest levels of academic study, he submitted himself for to the service of the Church. From 1960-63, he served on the faculty of Serampore University West Bengal, India. Out of his love for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the call from the Ethiopian Patriarch he went to there and served in the Haile Salassie University from 1963-66 and again in 1968-76. From 1966-68 and 1978-80 he served as a Professor at the United Theological College Bangalore. In 1980, Malankara (Indian) Orthodox Church appointed him as the Dean of the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam.

For the next ten years in his advanced age he served the Seminary and Federated Faculty of Research in Religion and culture. He also served as Principal, Visiting Professor, Research Guide, Examiner, Governing Board Member etc., in many seminaries and universities in India and abroad. He was a great scholar, teacher and an unrivalled identity among all the Eastern Orthodox Churches. His famous theological research work 'the Council of Chalcedon re-examined' had significant effect to resolve the centuries old misapprehension and rivalry between the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant Churches and also between Oriental and Byzantine Orthodox Churches. Hence he paved path for interchurch dialogues and for better cooperation among Christian Churches all over the world. He had pioneered the entry of Malankara Orthodox Church in the World Council of Churches (WCC) and he served in the 'Faith and Order Commission' of WCC for almost quarter century.

He represented Indian Orthodox Church in most of the world forums. His participation in the international forums of Christian-Hindu-Muslim dialogues is also very important. Considering his versatile scholarship and dedicated service to the Malankara (Indian Orthodox) Church, the Late Catholicose H.H. Baselios Augen I honoured him as an 'Ambassador of the Church' in the year 1968. He was erudite in 15 languages including Syriac, Greek, Latin, Hebru, Sankrit, Spanish, Ethiopian and Russian. He had written more than 30 books and published hundreds of research papers. Among his books, 'Yeshukristhu Aru?' (Who is Jesus Christ?) is a great contribution to Christology and 'Ethoru Indian Sabhayo? (Is this an Indian Church?) points to his meticulous views about a unified Indian church. Several of his books are included in the curriculum of different Theological Colleges around the world including those of Ethiopian, Greek and Coptic Churches. As a dedicated priest, Fr. Samuel was the Founder Vicar

ROLE OF WOMAN IN INDIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH

By DR. M. S. ALEXANDER, ENGLAND

God recognised the need for a woman in the life of a man and that is the reason why he created Eve in the Garden of Eden. Church recognises the need for a woman in a man's life and that is the reason why the Church accepts matrimony as a sacrament and conducts Holy Matrimony service to join a man and a woman in the presence of God to become husband and wife. During the service the Priest gives the same advice to the bride and bridegroom. The Church gives permission to the newly wed couple to lead a family life after the marriage. The church itself is considered to be the bride of our Lord.

Yet, very sadly women are treated as second-class people in the church. Many of us when they think of women, they think about, "That woman in the street, or that woman who comes to do the kitchen work or clean the house" and do not think about their own mothers, wives, or sisters. Very often I ask the question, "Who is a member of our Church?". The answer to this question is very complex. By tradition, women are not members of the Parish and this excludes 50% of the members of the Church. Male children and young people are also excluded and this will exclude about 15% to 20 % of the members of the Church. Those who are not paying membership subscription are also excluded. This includes those people who are poor, old, unemployed, disabled, and people who are temporary residents living in the area of the Parish and a large number of free riders who continue to be involved in Church activities without taking membership, as the membership is taken by the senior most adult member of the family. This means that only adult male persons paying the membership fee determined by the Parish are members of the Parish and this may be only about 20% of all the eligible members of the Church attending the Parish.

Can all such members of the Parish attend annual general body meeting and influence the decisions of the Parish? No. By tradition it is important that only those members of the Parish who confess and receive Holy Communion are allowed to attend the general body meeting of the Parish. This means that only about 10% of the eligible members of the Church within the Parish are allowed to attend annual general body meeting and accept membership of the parish committee.

This means that our Parish work is managed by less that 10% of the total membership of our Church and naturally those who taken part in the activities of the Church is, "Activists or Extremists." They use the Church as a platform to promote their own self-interest. This is one of the main reasons why there is frequent conflict during general body meetings within the Church. Of course there are some good people among the 10% who continue to do a good job of maintaining our faith and tradition.

Who is losing out of our policy? I have noted that a number of young people leave our Church because they do not see a role for themselves within the Church. They go else where they are welcomed and were they have a role to play. In addition to this, we have excluded 50% of the members of our Church (women) from the activities of the Parish, Sadly, the Church is scoring own goal leading to self-destruction by our policy of excluding women and other good people who can contribute to the work of the Parish.

How much are we losing out by our policy? It is difficult to quantify the loss for our Church by excluding women. However, I am absolutely convinced that we are losing out intellectually, and losing out many useful workers, and losing out in many other ways. The financial loss is enormous. Pointing out the one penny that was donated by a widow, Jesus told the Disciples that she contributed more than anyo0ne else present in the synagogue because she gave all that she had. In the olden days women were not working and earning. Nowadays a substantial number of women work, they are good earning members, and they certainly can contribute they can pay their own membership fee from their own income and they can contribute generously for various activities. By excluding our women, we are depriving ourselves of generous contribution from women.

Women are taking an important role in the day-to-day running of our society at present. A substantial number of them work as teachers, nurses, lawyers, doctors, judges, civil servants etc. In fact women can be seen in every type of employment. Sexual discrimination in the place of work is against Human Right Acts, and against the law. The society recognises their ability to contribute. Why cannot we recognise their ability to contribute to the policies and activities of our Church?

Women certainly can enhance the quality of worship in the Church. At present they are only responders of prayer and hymns and they are not initiators to read Bible or start hymns etc. Of course, we all know that women read the Bible in their homes, in prayer groups, in Sunday School etc. and if they can read elsewhere why cannot they read inside the Church aswell? It is well known that women can sing songs very well with a beautiful voice and why cannot they initiate hymns?

It is high time for our Church to review the role we give to women in our church . It is may personal view that women should be allowed to take membership of the Parish by paying the subscription fee. The right for membership should be matched with the responsibility to pay the membership fee aswell. This will certainly increase the membership of the Parish, and certainly increase the income of the Parish.

It is may personal view that every adult-male or female-should become a member of the parish by paying voluntarily a membership fee accepted by the parish. Of course there should be exception for those who are unable to pay the membership fee. It is may personal view that women should attend the annual general body meeting of the Parish and they should have voting rights. They should be able to stand for election to become members of the parish Committee and should have the opportunity to take membership of the committee or even become office bearers of the Parish.

It is my personal view that women should be allowed to become members of the Managing Committee of our Church. They are capable to influence the decisions at the highest level in our Church. It is my personal view that women should be allowed to speak publicly the Church or in our meetings. We all know that they talk a lot in private and why should we stop them speaking in public.

Participation of women in activities of our church as levels increases the number of workers available to various works of our Church. We always say work is plenty but workers are few. This human resource problem can be overcome to some extent by involving women in the activities of the Church. When we think about women, let us think about or own mothers, wives, sisters and this will make it easier for us to give an important role for women in or Church. This will certainly help our Church to become a 21st Century Church and responding to the changes that are happening within our society, and increasing our commitment to serve our Lord Jesus Christ.

FIVE MORE ROSARY PRAYERS ADDED BY POPE:
2002-2003 ROSARY YEAR

By SEBU THOMAS

Holy Father Pope John Paul II has added five new mysteries to the prayers of the rosary. The new 5 mysteries added to Rosary Prayers are the 'Mystery of Light' .These Luminous Mysteries are: 1. Jesus Baptism in the Jordan, 2. Jesus self-manifestation at the wedding of Cana, 3. Jesus proclamation of the Kingdom of God, with his call to conversion, 4. Jesus Transfiguration 5. The Institution of the Eucharist, as the sacramental expression of the Paschal Mystery. These new mysteries are to be prayed on Thursday.

The existing fifteen prayers of the Rosary are grouped to 1.Mysteries of Sorrow prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays 2. Mysteries of Joy prayed on Mondays and Thursdays 3. Mysteries of Glory prayed on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Rosary of the Virgin Mary is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the Magisterium. Even after two thousand years, its freshness of the beginnings and the touch of Holy Spirit is never faded. Many of the earlier Popes also considered and proposed the Rosary as an effective spiritual weapon against the evils afflicting society. John Paul II, Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church had witnessed that from his youthful years Rosary Prayers has held an important place in his spiritual life. Pope emphasized 'The Rosary has accompanied me in moments of joy and in moments of difficulty. To it I have entrusted any number of concerns; in it I have always found comfort. Twenty-four years ago, on 29 October 1978, scarcely two weeks after my election to the See of Peter, I frankly admitted: "The Rosary is my favorite prayer. A marvelous prayer! Marvelous in its simplicity and its depth. [...]. '

Recitation of the Rosary contemplates with Mary the face of Christ. Pope had proclaimed the year from October 2002 to October 2003 as the Year of the Rosary to commemorate this rare occasion with a handmade rosary to remember an exciting time in history and pray for peace. Rosary represents a most effective means of fostering among the faithful that commitment to the contemplation of the Christian mystery. In the current era of of increased violence and bloodshed, the rediscovery of Rosary is very important as one cannot recite the Rosary without feeling caught up in a clear commitment to advancing peace, especially in the land of Jesus, still so sorely afflicted and so close to the heart of every Christian. The Contemporary culture, even amid so has witnessed the flowering of a new call for spirituality that Christian communities should become 'Genuine School of Prayers'.

INJUNCTION ORDER TO SHRESHTA CATHOLICOS:PERUMBAVOOR CHURCH

By JACOB YESUDASAN

Kochi : October 11 : The Division Bench of the Kerala High Court consisting of Justice S. Shankara Subayan and Justice A. Lekshmikutty issued orders to the police and to the Government, preventing entry of Shreshta Catholicos Thomas I into St. Jacobs Church, Allapra, Perumbavoor.

The Hon'ble High Court was hearing a petition submitted by T.K. Kurian and two others of Allapra, beseeching police protection against the declared force full entry of the Baselius Thomas I into this church before 14th October 02, in violation of the prevailing orders of the Ernakulam Distract Court that the former should not enter into any parishes of the Diocese of Ankamaly, Kandanad, and Kochi that are being governed according to the constitution of 1934, in either capacity as Catholic or as Metropolitan.

It is the duty of the police to maintain law and order and to enforce the civic responsibilities of the citizens. If the police don't take action against those who defy the court orders, the court expressed concern about the future of Judiciary. It is a pointer to the apathetic attitude of the state government and the police, in the present context.

REMEMBERING ST. THOMAS : UNORTHODOX REFLECTIONS ON ST.THOMAS

By REV. DR. VALSAN THAMPU

Mathoma Sleeha
ST.THOMAS
FOUNDER OF INDIAN CHRISTIANITY

On Sunday the 6th of October we commemorated St. Thomas, the Apostle of Christ who brought the Good News of Jesus Christ to India. On this occasion it may be worthwhile to reflect on the significance of Jesus' special post-Resurrection encounter with Thomas as recorded in the 20th chapter of the Gospel According to St. John. It is especially instructive to do so in the light of the later mission of Thomas for which this privileged experience must have been a prelude and a preparation. Surprisingly, it was Thomas alone among the disciples who was given the privilege to touch the wounds of Christ. Not even Peter, the designated rock on which the Church would be built, had this privilege. Why was this? Was it just an accident? Was Thomas being rewarded for his skepticism? Or was he being trained to encounter the soul of India?

All through the history of Indian religiosity, we notice two distinct and dichotomous strands. There is, on the one hand, an excess of blind devotion, untrammeled by the claims of reason. It is this that, from a western point of view, makes Indian religiosity seem particularly dark and unspiritual. This a-rational religiosity has a broad spectrum, ranging from the mystical to the occult, from the unthinking to the orgiastic as in Tantric traditions. But there is also a different strand: the skeptical tradition that runs parallel to the devotional. These two rarely meet in the geometry of Indian religiosity.

Significantly, Thomas' encounter with the Risen Christ becomes the integrative framework for these two contrary strands. He begins from the skeptical and moves on to the devotional. What emerges from this pilgrimage of spiritual enlightenment is a complex and more challenging idea of faith itself.

Quite contrary to the witness of the Bible, a very large number of people in Christendom, especially in India, assume that faith and reason are contrary poles: that spirituality and intellectuality do not mix. It is against this background that the spiritual profundity of Thomas' meeting with the Risen Christ is understood best. What is the picture of faith that emerges through Thomas' encounter with Jesus?

Thomas begins from a position, say, of rational skepticism. He demands empirical evidence. He won't believe in the Resurrection unless he touches the wounds of Christ. He insists on experiencing for himself the truth of what he is required to believe. This is not all that unreasonable, given the context. The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus shift the relationship of the Apostles with him to a new level of faith. As long as Jesus was with them physically, the demands that their relationship with him made on their faith was minimal. With Crucifixion this shifts to a higher gear. It marks a more exalted stage of their faith in their Master. It was for this reason that Jesus said it was necessary and good for the disciples for him to leave them for a while. A significant aspect of their new situation is this: the greater their faith, the higher too the risk that it would be corrupted and abused. Even Jesus had to undergo temptations in the wilderness (Mtt. 4:1-11) to come to terms with this spiritual reality. The ordeal of growth in faith is somewhat as follows. The higher your faith, the more untrammeled you are by the material world around you. But the more liberated you are from limitations of this order, the greater the chances that you will abuse its power and resources for ulterior and ungodly ends.

The worst scandal in the sphere of popular religiosity is the exploitation of the human capacity for devotion to God. The religious and ruling elite has, all through the ages, manipulated this sacred instinct to their own advantage. This is a blatant reality in contemporary India; and it is a great pity that its fundamental irreligion goes unnoticed by the masses. In a spiritual sense, the political or communal exploitation of bhakti (devotion) is a greater sin than prostitution is. This was what Jesus meant when he said to the Pharisees that prostitutes stood a better chance of inheriting heaven than they did. Prostitution of the sense of the sacred is a worse spiritual offence than the prostitution of the body.

That being the case, we can understand the relevance of responsible skepticism -which is distinct from nihilism or agnosticism- in the domain of religion. Unfortunately, people have been conditioned to believe that skepticism has no place in the symphony of faith. What we have achieved in this process is the promotion of unthinking or blind faith, which is waiting to be exploited by anyone clever enough to do so. Those who are familiar with the histories of religions would know that sham or deception has been endemic to the sphere of religion. Superstitions are only a small part of this awkward phenomenon. The worst is the enslavement of the people by the religious elite and their cynical use as foot soldiers in the fight to secure or advance vested interests. The ultimate desecration of religion as the sphere of the sacred is the cynical use of human beings as dispensable instruments to subserve selfish ends, no matter in what ulterior wrappings they are presented. It is this mindset, never absent from the dynamics of the religious establishment, that led to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Significantly, Jesus does not resent the spirit of skepticism in Thomas. Instead, he meets it with an open mind. The greatness of the Risen Christ is not only that his wounds are open, but also that his mind is open. As a matter of fact, "openness of mind" is a key message in Resurrection; a spiritual truth with which the Church does not seem to have come to terms yet (cf. Lk. 24:45). If Jesus were upset with Thomas's skepticism, he would not have treated him the way he was.

Jesus does not endorse or validate the "faith versus fact" syndrome, the like of which is championed by Hindu fundamentalist forces in this country today. According to the spokesmen of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, matters of faith are beyond the call of facts. So the Supreme Court is alleged to be incompetent to adjudicate in the Ayodhya imbroglio. Biblically, though, faith and fact are in a state of on-going dialogue with each other. It is from fact that we proceed to faith and it is because of faith that we relate to facts of a certain order at all. Faith empowers fact.

But the spiritual insight is that reality is more than the sum of visible facts. Reality is like an iceberg, nine-tenths of which remain submerged. In the absence of faith, or in a reductively rational scheme of things, reality will be misconstrued as only the visible, the one-tenth, part only. Seen in terms of our immediate context, the reality about Jesus is not merely that of the wounds that Thomas is allowed to touch and verify. Nor are the wounds irrelevant to the total reality. They are the approach road to the temple of total reality.

Hence the profundity of Jesus' words to Thomas. It is good that seeing has led Thomas to believing. But greater is he who does not see and yet believe. It is of utmost importance to note that these words are said only after Thomas is granted the privileged experience of seeing and touching the wounds of Christ. If so, what Jesus implies here not the need to exclude empirical experience or evidence from the sphere of faith. Faith, as the writer of Hebrews rightly says, is the "evidence of things not seen" (Heb.11:1). That does not mean that faith implies blindness or indifference to things visible. By no means! The biblical faith is a historical faith and it cannot afford to be nonchalant to the warp and woof of life. The Cross of Christ is a transforming engagement with reality.

The problem with Thomas was not that he was too skeptical. It was, instead, that he was not skeptical enough. Mature skepticism must involve skepticism also of skepticism. That skepticism will help us realize the limitations of empirical evidence in the destiny of mankind. That was what Jesus was trying to make him understand. Spirituality is the point of convergence for fact and faith. And it is this enlarged and integrated worldview of spirituality that India needs; for it is in this respect that Indian spirituality seems to be deficient. Thomas was not sent to India to gain a few converts. He was sent here by a divine dispensation to impact and empower the spiritual evolution of India. It is doubtful if the Church has addressed this seriously in its historical existence in this country over two millennia. This is a fact that we cannot sweep under the carpet of ceremonies as we commemorate the life and works of St. Thomas.

Geevarghese Mar Coorilos
H.G.Geevarghese Mar Coorilos

The 7th October is the birthday of H.G. Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, an exalted and veritable tower of knowledge of today. H G. is the Metropolitan of Mumbai Diocese, Bishop Vice President of MGOCSM, One of the Patrons of St.Gregorios Orthodox Society (SGOS), President of NCCI as well as MCCI and the youngest of all the Metropolitans of the Holy Church. Let us all join together to wish a very happy and blessed Birthday to our beloved Thirumeni and to pray for all sorts of blessings upon Thirumeni and His activities.

A short glimpse of the biography of H.G. Mar Coorilos is given hereunder as a tribute and a birthday present to our beloved Thirumeni from St. Gregorios Orthodox Society.(SGOS) His Grace Mar Coorilos was born to P.K. Kurian, Puliyeril, Kollad, Kottayam and Mary Kurian, Kizhakkedathu Mamkoottathil, Makkamkunnu Pathanamthitta on 7th Oct. 1949. He was affectionately called George Kutty. He had his primary education at St. Andrews LP School, where his father was the Manager later. M.T. Seminary High School, Kottayam was the venue of his High School education. He further joined C.M.S. While serving St. Gregorios Orthodox Parish in London as it's Vicar, he took Post Graduate Diploma in Pastoral Theology from Heythrop College, London University and PG Diploma in Theology and Mission from Urban Theology Unit, Sheffield, U.K.

During his school days he was active in studies and excelled in extra curricular activities especially elocution, drama, Mono act. He was the first prize winner for Mono act competition during the Bala Jana Sakhyam annual camps for three years consecutively. He had a flair for acting humerous roles, but many of the memorable roles are of the heroines. He had held many responsible positions of Sunday school, Youth Movement, MGOCSM, Bala Jana Sakhyam etc and having attractive behaviour and exemplary character, he had shined everywhere. In those days, he has secured so many prizes and awards for these activities. For the Sunday school studies he was very keen and enthusiastic and hence he was the affectionate of his teachers. When the Parish priest asked him to serve the Altar, he was not very willing at first; still his younger brother's enthusiasm compelled him to take up the task. In the young age he was also naughty like other smart and intelligent children, still he was highly talented in preserving the purity of mind and body in everything inside and outside. He utilized the time for systematic life with prayer and meditation without the notice of others. In the young age also he was highly interested in helping his parents in their assignments.

He was ordained as Sub Deacon on 26th Dec.'70 and full deacon on 26th Dec.'74 by H.G. Dr. Mathews Mar Athanasios Metropolitan (later H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews II, Catholicose) He was ordained as priest by H.G. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilus Metropolitan on 21st Dec '75. From that day, he is well known as Rev.Fr. George Kurian. Fr. George Kurian served MGOCM as Asst Director and warden of the Student centers at Kottayam and Trivandrum during 75-80 and as the General Secretary from 80-86. While the young Deacon started serving the Movement, H.G. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilus Metropolitan, a class mate and well wisher of his father was the President of MGOCSM. He enjoyed a sort of fatherly affection from H.G. Dr. Theophilus Thirumeni from the very beginning till the last days of H.G. Dr. Mar Theophilus Thirumeni. H.G. Mar Coorilos also enjoyed that period by serving the great Scholar and own predecessor like a beloved son. Achievements of the Student Movement during his service are numerous and marvelous.

Fr. George Kurian has served St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, London for about two years (during 86-88), which is the only Parish where he has served as the vicar. It was a venue for him, to be active in the field of inter-church dialogues, with oriental Orthodox and Byzantine orthodox churches, as well as with other non-Orthodox Churches. In this field, His Grace is an authority now and he is the present Ambassador of Malankara Orthodox Church. During the stay at London and later, he visited so many monasteries and ancient churches all over Europe. His Grace has attended a number of international conferences, dialogues and Seminars and has extended leadership for many forums. His Grace could raise the voice of Malankara Orthodox Church in those programs.

So far, he could serve as the Member of the Mission Board, Editorial board- Orthodox Youth, Small scale project fund, Andhra Pradesh Relief fund, Marriage assistance Foundation, Sick Aid Foundation, Christu Sishya Ashram, Coimbatore. Presently he is the President of NCCI, MCCI, Gregorian Community and Gateway. He is the member of the Governing board of CASA, CMAI and Council board CMC. He was one of the leaders of the Dialogue between the Oriental Orthodox Church and Anglican Church, Youth DPT of KCC and NCCI. He is the Chairperson of the commission on Byzetntine and Oriental Churches and he was the Chief organizer of Syndesmos Assembly in Effingham, UK, and Group leader of the VIth Assembly of WCC, at Vancouver, Canada, Oriental Clergy Fellowship in U.K. and Middle East priests Conference at Cyprus etc. He has visited almost all countries of the world except a few countries in Far East and Australia. In a short span of time, there won't be another Bishop of our Church who has traveled so widely and so often. These visits have added a great wealth of knowledge in him. He was elevated as a Heiromonk - Ramban on 31st March 90 by H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews I, Catholicose. In those days he was known as V.Rev. Geevarghese Ramban and he was consecrated by His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews II, the Catholicose on 30th April 91. From this date His Grace was serving as the Asst Metropolitan of Mumbai Diocese. On 27th Sept. 2002, he was elevated as the Metropolitan during the Sunthroneeso service at Devalokam and on 2nd Oct at Vashi Diocesan Head Quarters by H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews II Catholicose.

H.G. Mar Coorilos is very beloved to every one especially the youngsters who would get a chance to meet him/talk to him/or listen him. In all places of his jurisdiction, people of all walks of life irrespective of caste, creed and colour, around the churches and institutions, do appreciate his novel leadership and services. Recently, when there were public meetings in different parts of Mumbai, in honour of H.H. the Catholicose, lay leaders of social services and political activists belonging to different religions and faiths appreciated Thirumeni's efficient leadership in the social activities. The services, which are rendered by him after taking over the charge of President of the NCCI, are well appreciated by the member churches as well as the other organizations and Governmental agencies. The dialogue between NCCI and VHP leaders and later with Sikh leaders is highly commendable. His Grace is optimistic about the harmony among the Indian religions.

May God Almighty strengthen his arms to work more and more effectively. May God grant His Grace long life with happiness, peace and good health in addition to all other blessings. May God strengthen our beloved Thirumeni to lead and guide the Holy Church in more and more responsible positions in the future. Our sincere felicitations are hereby offered to His Grace. Once again, let us all join together to wish a very happy and blessed Birthday to our beloved Thirumeni and to pray for all sorts of blessings upon Thirumeni and His activities.
