The year 2002 is the 1950th jubilee of St. Thomas' entry into the Indian soil. The Traditional Churches in India celebrate this Jubilee year. Catholic Church in India has taken the lead in this direction. Also the occasion coincides with the 450th anniversary of the entry in to Eternity of St. Frances X'avior, the Second Apostle of India.
The land - mark of the Jubilee celebrations was the inauguration of the ' Faith Gathering' of thousands of believers at Kochi on 17th November by the First Citizen of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdual Khalam.
Christianity in India is as old as Christianity itself. Historians and leaders like Jawherlal Nehru and Dr. Ragadhra parsed have given affirmative testimony that even before Europe and other Western
Countries got the light of Gospel, India had come to Christian Faith, but the present day false propagation of some people regarding the spread of Christian religion in India is deplorable. Christianity is not a foreign religion for India nor Indian Christians are foreigners. The tradition is that St Thomas, one of the 12 Apostles of Christ , spread the Gospel in Malankara-the ancient name of Malabar i.e Kerala . There is a prominent community of Christian who believe that their fore- fathers inherited the Gospel and the Faith from St.Thomas and who are proud of it. They like to call themselves 'St. Thomas Christians' . These ancient Christens now belongs to all Christian Denominations like Roman Catholic Church, Malankara Orthodox Church, Marthoma and CSI Churches. A few have been scattered in
There is no contemporary
written historical records of the Apostle's arrival and of his Evangelical work in Kerala. But the folklore or Ballads like' Veeradian Pattu,' ' Margam Kalli Pattu' and 'Ramban Pattu' (Pattu in Malayalam means Song) describe the arrival and Gospel work of St. Thomas. The Scholars opined that 'Ramban pattu' is historically important as it depicts that the Saint arrived in AD 52 at Kodunglloor with Habban, a merchant Jew. It is also stated in it that the Ballad was composed by one Thomas Ramban who received baptism directly from St. Thomas and in AD 1601 it was re-edited by another Thomas Ramban of the former's 42nd generation.
The seven churches he established in Malankara are Kodunglloor, Kollam, Niranam, Nilikal (Chayal), Kokamangalam, Kottakav (Paravoor) and Paloor. Priests were ordained from four of the Bhramain Families who came to the fold of Christ. The tradition is that the ancient Church at Thiruvamkottu, formarly in Venad (Travancore) and now in South Tamil Nadu, was also established by St.Thomas. This is known as 'Arapally' (half Church). However, no descriptions available as to why this Church is called so.
After completing Evangelistic Mission in Malankara, the Saint went to Mylapur in Tamil Nadu and established the famous Church there.
St. Thomas got martyrdom in AD 72 at Mylapur and he was buried there. His tomb is a place of pilgrimage for centuries . In fourth century AD, his relics have been taken to Edessa. December 21st and July 3rd are the commemorative days respectively of his death and relics carried to Edessa.
The Christian faith has served the land in various fields. Many a vice of the society, the child marriage, Sathi, untouchably etc., have been
irradiated with the spread of education by the Christian Institutions. The spread of Gospel has help the people to the think of the basic right of equality among men. The political thought of India's freedom was rooted among the educated few of the Indian society. The service rendered by the Indian Christianity - the institutions and the individuals- in the field of social uplift of the poor, charity, education and services are manifold.
It is for the healthy
co-existence of Indian Religions that every Indian should have the knowledge of Christian heritage. The Gospel of peace, salvation and freedom in Christ should reach to each and every one of the world and no Indian is an exemption, as Jesus has come to save the whole world. But in recent times in India, some are trying to block it with muscle power and some with legal regulations. Men could be scared off and silenced, but "God's Will be done on earth as it is in heaven"

In this age of cosmetic feminism, women are allowed to be the ambassadors of God in certain churches in celebrating the Holy Communion, where as in few other churches women are permitted to participate in everything except celebrating the Holy Mass. Neither the celebration of the Holy Eucharist nor getting involved in committee and parish meetings are allowed in some minority churches. Why the issue of allowing women in participating all the theatres of parish life is a thorn in the flesh of various churches? Man was so far assigned to be the protagonist of the altar. Despite the secular arena is challenged and threatened by the rule of the equal opportunity dogma, certain churches are still trying to cling on to the harness set by the male chauvinists of the bygone era. Let us examine whether there are facts and fantasies in such a hypothesis, theological as well as pragmatic.
THEOLOGICAL EXEGESIS SEX IMMUNITY:
There are no sexual propensities in the Infinity, hence no room for conjugal pleasure or marriage in Heaven ( Mt 19). As soon as the forbidden fruit was tested, the dormant sexuality was aroused in the first parents ( Gen 3:7). The lust of sex impulse is the gateway for all other lusts. As Paradise was not meant for sexual acrobatisms, Adam and Eve were spontaneously thrown out of the garden of Eden. The church is the second heaven (Heb 8:5), consequently, the House of the Lord cannot be desecrated by the intermingling of both sexes, the presence of iron filings with the magnet, other than at the time of worship in segregate pews or in two separate rows. Even though the sanctity of the worship was apparently guarded till now, the dawn of the same-sex (homosexual) relationships and the child paedophile touching the altar is to be proved as a sign of the eventual demise of the church and the imminent descent of the Lord soon after (Mt 24:15). A woman is also not to be enticed to the altar owing to the cycle of biological clocks and the attraction of sensual attention. The hand that plucked the forbidden fruit cannot touch the Body of Christ.
BIBLICAL EVIDENCE:
WOMEN'S ROLE
The vexation of the spirit of the present generation is that the woman is liberated from the clutches of man and her home duties. Children as a result, go astray in all directions ( 2 Tim 3:1-7). When the heart woman is transformed as a brain woman, the earth feels its wound and draws closer to the consummation of the time. The woman is the heart and man, the brain of humanity. Their complementary functions give balance and equilibrium to mankind " Two swords cannot be put into the same sheath."The tentacles of pseudo democracy have interchanged and exchanged the essence and functions of man and woman. A brain woman cannot excel a heart woman. It doesn't mean that intelligence and academic qualifications are a disqualification for a mother; it only drives home an idea that nobody can serve two masters at the same time faithfully, effectively, and efficaciously. A career woman has so many hurdles in effectively dedicating as a carrier woman. A career woman is torn between home and workplace, hence forcing millions and millions from true wedlock, and aligning themselves with the defacto cohabitation relationship, which accelerates to thrive the sex industries in a luxuriant magnitude, thereby jumping from the frying pan into the fire ( society) by the disintegration of the web of sacrosanct family life. The original authority given to man to rule over woman is still valid now(Gen.3.16) as the motherhood is not yet transferred to man. |

Mother Teresa's beatification is officially scheduled Oct 19, 2003. Mother Teresa (1910-1997) was a worldwide emblem of Christian charity.
Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, in Macedonia, Teresa discovered the face of the suffering Christ in Calcutta among the poorest of the poor. The founder of the Missionaries of Charity will be beatified next year. Daughter of a grocer, she became a nun and went to India as a young woman. After studying nursing, she moved to the
slums. Mother Theresa's secret was that She was a woman totally in personal love with Jesus. Mother Teresa by her dedication to the poorest of the poor impressed the whole world irrespective of caste creed or religion. It is a great miracle that a frail woman went out into the streets of Calcutta and the world of sufferers, to touch and cure the sores of lepers and caress the untouchables of societies. During her youth hood as an young girl, she revealed that Jesus was her first love. Sacrifice of her life for the downtrodden was the response to a call from Jesus. Her central message was her love to Jesus first and then to her neighbour. During a public function of Mother Theresa's honour, then Prime Minister of Indira Ghandhi told 'In this world of today, so frenetic, it is easy to forget the most essential things. Mother Teresa teaches us that love is what is most essential.' Born in 1910 she joined the Sisters of Loreto in 1928. She took the name "Teresa" after St. Teresa of Avila, patroness of the Missionaries. Theresa started the Missionaries of Charity, at age of 36, with an amazing spiritual maturity. In 1948 she founded her order, which served the blind, the aged, lepers, the disabled, and the dying. Mother Teresa arrived in Motijeelof Calcutta in 1947, asking slum dwellers whether there were children she could teach. Teresa soon had scores of students learning their lessons in tin-roofed shacks. The community later built brick-and-plaster classrooms. She founded an order of nuns called the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India dedicated to serving the poor. In 1948, she came across a half-dead woman lying in front of a Calcutta hospital. She stayed with the woman and served her until she died. From that point on, she dedicated the majority of her life to helping the poorest of the poor in India, thus gaining her the name "Saint of the Gutters." Almost 50 years later, the Missionaries of Charity have grown from 12 sisters in India to over 3,000 in 517 missions throughout 100 countries worldwide.
Mother Teresa's voyage of sacrifice in India began, in Calcutta's Creek Lane, narrow for a pedestrian to pass a bicycle rickshaw. Three years before her start of the voyage, she had heard a call from God "to serve Him among the poorest of the poor."
She had been granted permission to found her own order, the Missionaries of Charity, in 1950.
In 1952, she founded the Nirmal Hriday Home for the Dying in a former temple in
Calcutta, the first of many homes for sick and dying street people. It was there that they would care for the dying Indians that were found on the streets. Here, Mother Teresa and her sisters cleaned maggots from the rotting faces of leprosy victims, washed the emaciated bodies of the malnourished, held the hands of the dying.
1953, 28 other women had joined her work. Mother had seen Jesus in everyone that she met. It didn't matter whether they were dying of AIDS or Leprosy. She wanted them to be able to die in peace and with dignity. For over 50 years, she worked selflessly helping the poor. That devotion towards the poor won her respect throughout the world and the Nobel Peace Prize in
1979. In 1963 the Indian government awarded her the Padmashri ("Lord of the Lotus") for her services to the people of India, and in 1971 Pope Paul VI awarded her the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize.
Eventually she
became worthy to be beautified as a Saint.
She dedicated every day of her adult life caring for "The dying, the cripple, the mentally ill, the unwanted, the unloved" and she loved every minute of it because she was loving, she was cleaning, feeding "Jesus in disguise".
Yes, she fed them, sheltered them, cleaned their wounds, but what is more important she made them feel good, loved, wanted, she gave them back their dignity that poverty had taken away from them and even if they died they died with a smile on their face....somebody loves them, somebody cares for them ....
During 1974 Mother told in an interview "I see God in every human being. When I wash the leper's wounds I feel I am nursing the Lord himself. Is it not a beautiful experience?" This quotation of Mother Threrasa if enough for any God loving person to understand the meaning of real love Jesus taught to us and to get inspired. "This not enough for us to say 'I love God', but I also have to love my neighbor. St.John says that you are a liar if you say you love God and you don't love neighbor. How can you love God whom you do not see, if you do not love your neighbor whom you see, whom you touch, with whom you live?"...Mother Theresa. The Nobel peace laureate, who founded a worldwide charity, died Sept. 5, 1997 At her death, the Missionaries of Charity had 4,000 nuns and ran 517 orphanages, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and clinics around the world. Over the last two decades of her life, Mother had suffered from heart problems. She suffered a heart attack during a 1983 visit with Pope John Paul II. She suffered another, and more serious, heart attack in 1989. It was then that a pacemaker was installed. During her last year, she suffered from malaria and was treated for a chest infection. Mother died in her convent in India at the age of 87.
Mother Teresa was a living saint and she will be greatly missed for ever. Eternal rest grant unto her Lord, and may Perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.
;
During here funeral the Message from Pope John Paul read as ' ...Mother Teresa of Calcutta understood fully this gospel of love. She understood it with every fiber of her indomitable spirit and every ounce of energy of her frail body. She practiced it with all her heart and through the daily toil of her hands, crossing the frontiers of religious and ethnic differences she has taught the world this lesson - it is more blessed to give than to receive. ...
The beggar, the leper, the victim of AIDS, do not need discussions and theories -- they need love. ...
The archbishop of Calcutta, Henry D'Souza:
"Perhaps the greatest message she has given to the world is the value and dignity of human life. All human life is precious, in whatever condition we find it, from the womb, to the tomb. "

With sad demise of Fr.Mathai Noornal we lost an amazing personality with courage, exceptional managerial quality, wisdom and the spirit of sparkling
entrepreneurship. He was a wonderful self made leader who could create imprints in several social, political and spiritual arenas of the society.
Fr. Noornal made his own impacts in Wynad an educationally, socially and financially
a backward area of Northern Kerala. As a migrant from Muvattupuzha to Wynad more than 50 years ago, Fr. Nooranal made his relentless contributions to the society, impartially. He was involved with many Church and Social
organizations. With his own merits and achievements in the social activities, he become very
influensive personality in the political and social circle, regardless of political parties or denominations. Educated himself for proficiency in languages
he traveled over India and abroad. He was a member of numerous committees at local, state and national level. His charisma overpowered all the obstacles of being a social and political figure
along with his ministry of an orthodox priesthood. His services to the Province of Sultan Battery and Waynad district as whole is unforgettable and his success story there was enviable. Fr.Nooranal was one of three trustees of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, which has up to approximately two million members in India. Also he worked as President of YMCA. The services done to the Church by Fr.Nooranal
were many, in organizing and building of Churches, hospitals, educational institutions etc. Fr. Mathai Nooranal is the name that will figure in the field of higher education of this Wynad district as the founder and guide of the first college of the district namely the St.Mary's College, at Sultan's Battery, established in 1965. The college offers post graduate courses in Politics and Chemistry and graduate course in Economics, Politics, Chemistry, Physics,
Botany and Commerce. His name also is associated with the development of co-operative movement in the state. Noornalachen will remain in the memory of Wynad and
particularly that of Sulthan Bathery for many generations. He had been the vicar of St. Mary's Cathedral in Bathery since 1951. Some of highlights of his services are summed up as: As a person Fr.Nooranal was very forthright and candid. He did what he believed right. In the history of our priests in the 20th century, one could hardly see a person like Noornalachen, who is just unique in all matters. He was a legend. He contested in state Legislative Assembly election in 2001 as an LDF backed
independent candidate. A section of the laity of his own church opposed his candidature. But that all did not come in the way of father Mathai Nooranal's electoral
planning. This colourful priest trustee of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church was pitted against N.D. Appachan of the UDF in north Kerala's Sulthan Bathery. Father Mathai Nooranal's electoral campaign annoyed some Christians because he had the support of the state's Communist-led ruling coalition.
Fr Mathai retorted to his opponents: "I am not the first priest in India to fight elections. In 1972, Father Jacob of Karnataka had won from the Dharwar assembly seat. Surely, I too can do it." Nearly a decade ago, the Keralite priest , Fr P.J. Jacob, was elected to the Karnataka Assembly with the support of the Janata Party.
Even though the church supported Fr.Noorannal's election bid, soon after the Communist leaders announced their support for Nooranal, a lay group within his church, the Malankara Orthodox Almaya Association, organized a press conference to condemn his election bid. Eventually the
prominent formidable LDF Independent, Fr Mathai Nooranal failed in hid bid to the UDF Candidate. Fr. Nooranal gained 45135 votes, compared to 68685 votes for N. D. Appachan, a Catholic layman and Congress party leader.
In many ways, Fr.Nooranal's activities in the social and political arena resembled to that of an earlier priest who articulated the church's viewpoint very eloquently and emphatically. He was Fr Vadakkan, the tall Catholic priest whose clamorous voice in support for the anti-Communist agitation, which was eventually, fell into the hands of then Congress party President Indira Gandhi. After a decade Fr Vadakkan was seen in another role,
as an ally of the same EMS Namboodiripad. Fr.Vadakkan emerged to politics in service to the community considering Jesus Jesus Himself as a revolutionary social and political activist. Fr.Nooranal is survived with Kochamma, and five sons and their families Mr. George Mathai Noornal CA, Mr.Abraham Mathai Noornal, IPS & IES, Dr. Isaac Mathai, Mr.Samuel Mathai Engineer and Dr.Professor John Mathai Ph D. We extend our deep sorrow and sincere condolence. May the departed soul of Nooranal Achen rest in peace! May the bereaved family members be consoled and comforted by God Almighty with His everlasting peace that surpasses all human knowledge. |
